RIP JamJam Radio, 2010 -2011.

It never had a chance. Wait – did it? Yeah. Sort of. Being online, everything has a chance to get picked up by the masses. Everything can possibly get whipped up along the tides of public interest, can be dragged into the consciousness of the popular kids, and can forever be remembered as that podcast that everybody loved. Everything on the internet can be that podcast, but JamJam Radio wanted other things. Like that pretentious guy who thinks that success equates selling out, JJR stuck to the underground. In keeping it on the DL, the people that it spoke to were select and few, the dreams that it inspired were the future dreams of other artists and innovators, the words and songs shared through this channel will be the stuff of legend…or so I tell myself. I mean, once I get mega-famous we’ll have to make sense of this mess somehow. I can’t look like I made a mistake! Welcome…to the end of JamJam Radio.

Last night it took me precisely 26 minutes to eat an entire medium sized pizza. I say this only so there is a record for the doctor that has to operate on my spindly, over-cheesed body. I make these podcasts so that there’s a record of how cool I sounded to future generations. WILL MY KIDS THINK I WAS COOL???

Download That Retro-Futuristic-Fetish-Thing That Everyone’s Always Talking About

This podcast has been active and running for approximately a year now. That’s crazy! That means that 1/23 of my life has been spent on imagineering this audio delight that comes just about once a week. I missed last week (faulty internet) so I’m doubling up on this week. Hurray! Huzzah! What fun! SO – will there be changes to JJR in the future? Are there exciting new things around the corner? Maybe. I kind of make it up as I go along…

Some people ask me how serious I am about my podcasts. They’ll say, “Andrew? How serious are you about these podcasts?” To which I’ll reply, “Very.” That’s right. I don’t take this job lightly. For me, it’s taken much more heavily. It’s hard to look as cool as I do right now, sitting in some random cafe, punking wi-fi, eating a personal sized pizza and drinking iced tea I had them make specially for me. This type of behaviour wears me out. I’m going to be exhausted as soon as I step out of here tonight, so no, I can’t make it to your party.

What can I tell you about Slug Fists that hasn’t been said before? I guess that depends on how much you know. Like, do you already know about it’s ties to Cold War Propaganda? Do you already know about how it saved the lives of 4 beauty queens in Arizona? Do you already know that it can eat Deluxe-style pizzas, but only without the crust? In the end, I think the real question is whether or not you can really know a podcast, you know?

Oh, Sorry, I Got Distracted By The Internet

Download Oh, Sorry.

As of yesterday, my major research paper passed the review committee with no revisions, officially making me a Master of Media Production. The paper is titled:

OH, SORRY, I GOT DISTRACTED BY THE INTERNET:

TEXTUAL TRANSMISSION, RECEPTION AND REMEDIATION BY AND FOR FANS OF SCOTT PILGRIM

and as promised to curious friends and family, I’ve uploaded it for people to read. Just click on the title… This may seem familiar to listeners because of the Audio Play I finagled some friends into helping out with many months ago.

As a final touch to my essay, I compiled two mixtapes. One was from a contest I won where participants created their own SP soundtrack, the other is what I was listening to at the time I was writing the paper. The playlists are at the end of the PDF.

So thanks for checking these out if you’re interested. Looks like I’m graduating this fall.

Sometimes when I’m biking I think up things like, “I wonder how much spare change just gets lost every day…” Statements like that, I realize, can never really be studied or understood. Today I looked at a bunch of (shitty) apartments with my (best) friend and we were (very) disappointed. Sometimes things in life just should be good. Like every piece of pie, every birdsong in the morning, and all (sexy) people in their underwear, some things just should be good. Now, is the podcast good? (…) Yes. Heck (maybe) yes. It’s got songs and talking, and that’s really the only two parts of a perfect 2-part podcast recipe you could ever ask for. I just need to figure out how to mix them, and where to by the non-off-brand varieties…

Sometimes when you meet with old friends, you have to lay it all out on the table. For Matt I laid out a slightly old blueberry bagel, toasted, with some marble cheese. Do you have marble cheese where you’re from? Is that a thing? Regardless, it fuelled Matt up to talk with me about the things that old friends talk about. Next time he guests on the show, we’ll talk about the kinds of things that vets and butchers talk about. Does that sound controversial?

Just forget everything I’ve ever said. Every little word. And from here on out, don’t hear me out. Let my words whiz by like nothings in the wind. If things I’ve said could take on the form of drops of water, let them be rain that washes over you and cools you off, keeping in mind that you certainly wouldn’t drink it or take it seriously.

And before you think this is some self-deprecating commentary on the quality of my speech, realize that I’m trying to start a secret society whose messages pass through the posts/podcasts. If you stop listening, the more secret it gets. The more secret my society, the more money I’ll be rolling in! Is that how clubs work?

How do we, as a community, stand on rice cookers? Sometimes I want one, but sometimes I don’t want one. Then I worry that if I look back in a hundred years, will I wish to see the life I could’ve lead if I hadn’t acquired a rice cooker? When does balancing stop being an impressive skill? There is no doubt that balancing on a highwire is thrilling, and perhaps negotiating a sword perched on your chin will delight a few onlookers, but what would you say if I stood on one foot on the curb for a while? Or if I held up a broom in nothing but my flat palm? There is doubt about how thrilling and delightful those feats are, i.e., they are boring as shit. Which really sucks, you know, because I don’t want to believe that the only way to win people over is by riding a unicycle. I’m just not that guy. There’s gotta be another way. Podcasting? Nah…

Today is the day before a long weekend. I hope you all noticed my emphasis on that ‘a’ there, via italics. It’s standing alone, so the oomph might be hard to see, but it’s there. I say a long weekend, because obviously it’s not the long weekend. What’s that? Are you unclear about when the long weekend is? Or are you unclear about who is really asking me the questions? The long weekend, for the uncool masses who aren’t in the know, is the day we all decide to end this great North American experiment that we’ve all be apart of for many generations. It’s when we decide we’re going to call it a day, not go into work again, and fend for ourselves off the land. It’s going to be beautiful. And relaxing. And full of babes! But what will soundtrack this weekend? Probably not this podcast!

I really like the saying “On Death’s door.” Not that I often find myself on Death’s door, nor do I find myself leaving packages or bundles of babies (I think I meant bundled up babies there) on Death’s door either. Basically, I’m trying to say that I’m not trying to be the mayor of Death’s door on Foursquare – That game should be limited to public buildings, not private residences. But right now I’m on Sleepy Death’s door, and there’s no real equivalent way to say that. I’m tired. It’s late. I’m at the threshold to sleepy, but I don’t know how best to convey that. Am I on the border of Sleepytown? Is it high time for dream time? Is it time to slip into my night coma? Help me, language barons. You’re my only hope!

So I made a podcast yesterday, and it’s pretty good. It’s pretty good, but it’s also full of a lot of “Blah, blah, blah. My feelings. Ice-Cream. Let’s get real for a second,” which, while incredibly valuable in it’s own right, is a huge buzzkill. Sometimes. One of those times is right now. I wanted to put out something a bit lighter, and bit more polished, and a bit manlier. There was a long time between when I first heard the term “Oral Fixation” and when I realized that I had one. I’d hang onto toothpicks for too long, rub bottle tops on my mouth when I wasn’t drinking from them, or make hilarious noises by slapping popsicle sticks on my lips. Heck, I still do all of those things. But now it’s a “thing.” Back then it was an absent-minded tic, today it might be misconstrued as a latent homosexual urge. Frankly, I need guests. Not that I don’t love hearing myself host a show (because I don’t, but you do for some reason…) but I really need to remember what it’s like to spend more time around different people. Do you think a Craigslist ad would net cool people, or weirdos? I don’t want weirdos. I just want new friends. Because new friends will keep me in check. Once you’ve known someone long enough they’ll let you get away with wearing men’s tank-tops, or blowing your nose while jogging (I will never be okay with that!) but new friends will be a good balance to make sure your weirdness doesn’t take over. Plus, new friends could be hotties, and who knows…

I’m going for broke. Shit. I thought I could properly wait and hold out, I thought I could space parts 1 and 2 out enough, but instead I’m just throwing it all against the wall. To you, the listener, I humbly present Itch. This plus the sequel (Scratch) are a sandbox of ideas, confessions, and conspirings. My hope is that you will hear these late night ramblings as an inroad to asking me “Hey buddy. How’s it going?” To which I’ll naturally reply “Great! Now help me with this cask of fermented peaches!” I think it’s probably because I’ll be making peach wine. If I knew the recipe for peach schnopps, obviously we’d be making that. If anyone makes a ‘birthday suit’ joke, I swear I’ll bring a lead pipe to a christening and EVERYONE will be disappointed that I brought such a lame gift. “C’mon Andrew!” they’ll say, “This is a christening, not a game of Clue. Are you even a Christian?” And I won’t know how to answer them…

By the time you read this, I wil be…thinking about something else. It’s true! I’m sorry. How much stuff do you think about? Are you consistently writing/thinking/talking/singing about the same thing without getting distracted? Can you hold onto a moment or a thought or a photograph without it going up into flames? For two of those things “flames” was a metaphor, but for the third “flames” is an actual thing that happens when I touch photographs. I just gotta put sweet decals on all my photos. All my scrapbooks are car themed. All my cars are robot themed. All my Transformers are on VHS. All my DVDs are drink coasters. The kettle popped – Gotta run! Now where was I?

No seriously, where was I? I don’t recognize this neighbourhood.

And here we have another mix for xamounts. Surprisingly, she’s the only one that’s taken me up on the offer for trades. I’d take it personally if I also didn’t have an aversion for the stock market. Any kind of mass trading make my skin crawl like it was covered in a thousand spiders in lab coats who work for some big Wall Street firm. By that, of course, I mean doctor arachnids who work in licensing and merchandising for the Wall Street film franchise. It’s not that lucrative. Surprisingly not, I know.

As these have been in the queue for literally (1.5) months now, I imagine I’ve become a totally different person. Not, like, a paraplegic or anything (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and not a Jehovah’s Witness (not that there’s anything wrong with that either) but maybe just a guy with a beard. Or some new jeans. I’m gonna need some new jeans here soon. The crotches in all of my pants wear out so fast…

To be completely honest, I’m banking the shit out of these mixes. Like, if you had some gold Krugerrands and the original appearance of Willie Lumpkin, I would be putting those miracles directly into a safety deposit box and keeping the key. I’m not a very good banker, but I bank what I can. The point is that hopefully by the time this drops we’ll have some sick new tunes from Toro Y Moi, Memory Tapes, M83, Memoryhouse, and Elvis (Presley, of course) to listen to.

We don’t talk as much as we used to, so please allow me to ramble on here a little. Back in the day when I hosted REAL radio programs (that I actually had to lend my voice to) I would build very intricate sets of songs. They would always be in threes, and the songs would always share a theme or genre or feeling. Nowadays since I have no time to record the talking breaks, I have to build entire mixes in this fashion! It’s hard! But good. Oh so good. And you like it, right? (Not a creepy thing to say 5 times fast in a whisper at all!)

The Twentieth Question About Time Travel

Many months ago I got obsessed with time travel. I was unemployed. So sue me. But without solid follow-up or evidence, by Question 20 I was running out of ideas. I needed to get my queries out there. I needed metaphysicists and time travel experts to know there was a man out there with nearly a million(ish) questions about this largely made up science. And then I didn’t do anything with them for a long time, and eventually decided to make some podcasts so my time wasting wouldn’t completely go to waste. So here is Question 20 of 20 available for download (just click on the colourful link) or as always you can find JJR podcasts on iTunes.

It’s so hard to write these descriptions because I don’t want to give away any of the goods, even though I give away all the goods for free eventually! That’s my life, I guess. Coy at first, but then really…easy? I gotta work on my analogies.

But I strongly invite you to listen to this podcast, get into the music, maybe think about what I’m saying, ponder it over while listening to more music, and then getting back to me about it (andrewt.press@gmail.com). It sounds like a lot of work, but believe me, it’s not. I really want to talk all about how and why people do or do not make what they make. Maybe we can spark…a new friendship? Or just make a podcast of it…

Records…Personal Best

Download Records…Personal Best, maybe?

It’s rare for me to buy physical albums these days, let alone vinyl records. But I do love buying records for other people. My brother’s birthday is coming up, and so as I venture out to the local shops I decided to make a list of the albums that I would instantly buy on vinyl if I won the Record Lottery. Some of these are, yes, my favourites. But honestly, others are on this list because something inside me just gets so pumped about the idea of seeing the physical object, putting it on a turntable, and spacing out to album artwork and music.

These are 17 albums I would totally buy, no questions. I have no answers either…

  1. Refused – The Shape of Punk to Come
  2. X-Ray Spex – Germ Free Adolescents
  3. Jay Reatard – Blood Visions
  4. Tyvek – Nothing Fits
  5. Japandroids – Post-Nothing
  6. No Age – Nouns
  7. The Fresh & Onlys – Play it Strange
  8. Sunset Rubdown – Random Spirit Lover
  9. The Dead Science – Villainaire
  10. Owen Pallett – Plays to Please
  11. The Deadly Snakes – Porcella

Whilst drawing up my arbitrary categories for the year-end lists, I realized I’d made them too restrictive. Like on the off-chance a god creates a stone that even they cannot lift, I had to make a loophole. We, The Kiltered is that loophole. Also, I think I made up the word ‘kiltered’ so I’m kind of like an ultimate creator. Blasphemy, tsk tsk.

The Ninth Question About Time Travel

Many months ago I got obsessed with time travel. I was unemployed. So sue me. But without solid follow-up or evidence, by Question 20 I was running out of ideas. I needed to get my queries out there. I needed metaphysicists and time travel experts to know there was a man out there with nearly a million(ish) questions about this largely made up science. And then I didn’t do anything with them for a long time, and eventually decided to make some podcasts so my time wasting wouldn’t completely go to waste. So here is Question 9 of 20 available for download (just click on the colourful link) or as always you can find JJR podcasts on iTunes.

Podcast of Dreams

The right and honourable Anne T Donahue is bestowing her judge-y duties upon us in this Podcast of Dreams by dishing a top list of songs from 2010 (aka twenty-ten). We kind of talk about them. But we also kind of talk about friendship, etiquette, and *SPOILER ALERT* Dan Rather. I dunno. Whatever.

Anne can be followed on Twitter (@annetdonahue) or heard on Radio Laurier on Tuesdays or read on many many websites on the Internet.

Secret Desert Island Buried Pirate Treasure

Download Here: Secret Desert Island Buried Pirate Treasure

This got made between the hours of way too late and way too early, so there’s (oddly enough) no way it’s top quality. If it were a wine, it would be of the boxed variety.

Plus – oh man! Plus! – it’s preceded by all this justification talk. Blerg, my friends. ‘B’ to the ‘lerg.’

To be straight up, I’m making this podcast to show(off) to my class this morning about a) how easy it is to incoporate research into your daily life, b) the many different forms that research can take and still be fun, and c) the simplicity with which one can make a podcast. But saying it all sounds lame. For the most part I find that once I start seriously talking about my hobbies, they all end up like something you made out of a Jamie Oliver cookbook: Not as good as you thought it’d be.

Maybe this is why I’m an audio broadcaster. Because then I don’t have to talk to ANY of you about ANYTHING! Screw all of you! Enjoy the podcast!

p.s. I made a suckass Prezi of my presentation. The link is here (http://prezi.com/p6j_bak0b-6c/personal-research-experiences/). There are no realy words for context, so please feel free to adlib as you see fit!

We’ve Got Your Back Episode 4

Download Episode: We’ve Got Your Back Episode 4

How many people do you think own telescopes? I mean, like, for realz. In my life I have known 3 to 4 people that had a telescope prominetly displayed near a window, and probably most of them used their enhanced vision capacities only for good…and astronomy.

Living near an apartment building, it’s hard not to worry about this kind of thing. Our house has a very relaxed pants policy, so it’s not uncommon for one of us to be wandering around in just a pair of snug underwear. And by one of us, I clearly mean me. Scott’s a gentlemen with manners who doesn’t feel the need to show off his pasty thighs.

Over the past few years I’ve developed a window philosophy: Windows are for me. They are in my house so that I can enjoy the outside. They are not a part of my house so that the outside can enjoy me. This is not to say that people shouldn’t look into windows, but Caveat Emptor, you know? RIght? You all know some basic latin, right?

This Episode: Twue Cwime. Les Savy Fav. Sick Lipstick. What Is It Good For? Joy Division. Girls At Our Best! Sopra-NOOOOO! Swans.

We’ve Got Your Back Episode 3

Please let me be the first to apologize for our podcast. In no way are we ever meaning to offend or over-titillate listeners. And I say this now because it is my feeling, particularly with this instalment, that we are giving off the vibe of a “Dude Podcast.” Hell to the No, ladies and gentlemen. I never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever want to be considered a “Dude” – of course I’m speaking of the derogatory version of the word. I would totally be a surfer dude or a righteous dude or a total stand up dude, but it would kill me if someone thought of me as a backwards fullback, team spirit, beer bong type of Dude. I had to look up what a beer bong was to make sure it was the right word. Yeesh.

So sure this episode is all about sexy roller skating and my subsequent erotic confusions surrounding it, but I feel that Scott and I do try to stay out of Dude territory. Yes?

This Episode: Sexy Roller Skaters, Why? Jesuslesfilles. Love is All. Memories. Kid Cudi. The Xx. Internet Picture Jokes. Deerhunter.

We’ve Got Your Back Episode 2

I wish everyone could see the outfit I’m wearing tonight. Picture in your eyes the tightest pants I own with that reversible vest I bought at VV Boutique, thinking that something so versatile was such a great investment and yet I never really found the right occasion to wear it. Well, that occasion is tonight. And I look like I got lost after some bohemian beach party. If my hair was more like a mane and I wore large aviators people would assume I was the hippest castaway this side of Wilson’s brother. You’re probably not familiar with him. As it is, I’m not wearing socks or shoes and my pants aren’t even done up all the way. I’m seriously on a vacation.

But free time is the devil because idle hands make and idle mind, and only when you’re not thinking things can demons slip into your brain and take over your body. Fact. That’s why we’ve got another podcast.

This Episode: Geography. King Khan. Deadly Snakes. More Geography. Dum Dum Girls. DM Stith. Cemetery Secretary. Owen Pallett.

For Merritt Wever

Download: For Merritt Wever

Agh, is this weird? Has it finally gone too far?

One of my favourite tweets of recent months – which I will paraphrase and make longer than the original missive ever was – is that if you’ve read/watched/played/listened to something and really enjoyed it, then you should find some way to tell the people that made it. Now I don’t have the time or the inclination or the clout to make sure that Merritt Wever learns how much her portrayal of Zoey Barkow has made me laugh, or that her presence in a production comes across as wonderfully grounding. Instead I made a playlist for her, full of songs that reflect the feeling how fond of her I am.

It’s nice, right? Like, you’d want someone to do that same thing, even if it’s not something you’ve ever thought of…right?

Oi.

As part of the great musical mecca that I once again won’t be attending (sad face) Arbutus Records and Weird Canada are co-presenting an excellent showcase entitled “ARBUTUS/WEIRD CANADA SHOWCASE

And as I talk about and feature in the playlist, this showcase features Blue Hawaii, Pop Winds, Silly Kissers, and Grimes. It’s also Grimes’ CD release for her fantastic new album Halfaxa. If you can’t make it to Montreal this Thursday, then please-oh-please consider purchasing it from Arbutus for just $8+shipping. Do that and you’ll get a free poster. What?! Yeah.

Tahmoh, My Love Episode 4

Download: Tahmoh, My Love Episode 4

Are we, as a society, at a point where we can use ‘sexy’ as a compliment in a completely fact-based way?

For example, could I tell all of my friends that I thought they were all sexy without any repercussions? I hope so, because otherwise it’s going to be one tumultuous Halloween.

The hope is that my friends can take that compliment to mean as much as if I’d said something innocuous, i.e. I liked the way they tied garbage bags, or it pleased me to see their vintage t-shirt collection again. I want sexy to be a boring old ‘matter-of-fact’ compliment that doesn’t immediately/necessarily mean people should jump ahead to thinking I want to include myself in that sexiness of theirs. I’ve got my own sexy situation going on right here, so I don’t need the other one overe there… but goddamnit, I respect it. And I want you to know that.

I don’t know that this is a very sexy podcast, but I respect that you downloaded it. That’s a fact.

In general (and as a General) I don’t like how I have to make a big deal about female-powered bands. Music just is, dude, and like it sucks that it is sometimes presented as only being interested because women are involved.

-BUT-

Please allow me to say that sometimes I just crave the energy of music created by, with, and for ladies. There’s just some kind of fem-force that adds a little extra to the songs. And then sometimes I just like man songs.

-BUT-

This podcast is themed for feminine music. Not, like, femmy music, but hardish music that has the feminine edge. I think that’s how I would generally sum up my musical taste. Feminine by with an edge.

HOPE YOU LIKE IT!

Tahmoh, My Love Episode 2 is all about moving! Because I moved!

Heck, by the time you even read any of this, I’ll have moved and be settled in a completely different city.

The bonus? That above sentence is accurate if you read that now or 100 years from now, because it’s pretty much guaranteed that I won’t die in the same place that I’m in right now and be undiscovered for over a century. I will be found! It is my destiny!

What do you do when you’ve eaten more ice-cream sandwiches than god ever intended you to do in one day? You a) eat some more, and b) make a podcast. And then maybe throw up, because this really is a lot of sandwich.

This show is more about the music than the talking, but there is some talking in here. Anyways, I hope you like this mix. I’m trying to play with recontextualizing the emotions in songs and fitting that in with stories and bits. Hang on, I’ve gotta push my nerd glasses up.

If you like it, send me an e-mail at andrewt.press@gmail.com These are also available on iTunes, if you like that kind of thing.

Maybe you’ll want a show too?

The Lost Generation

Welcome!

This is the inaugural show for JamJam Radio, which both heralds and officiates its existence as a thing. Like, a real deal thing.

My name is Andrew T, and I used to host a radio show called Andrew T and the Dynamo Elite. But then I stopped that. I then I got kind of depressed because there was this void of broadcasting that was weighing me down. But now JamJam Radio is going to bring me up.

So please, stay tuned and get excited for mixtapes, shows, interviews, and other audio de-lites. Would you like to make an audio de-lite? Then send an e-mail to andrewt.press@gmail.com, and we can put together something of your very own and put it out through this very real and official channel.

So you can download the podcast from here (JamJam Radio – The Lost Generation). There are a lot of great songs on it. If this is not already in iTunes, it will be soon.

THANKS FOR LISTENING! Let me know what you think!
